My hunger pangs did not take mercy on me. Six and a half hours of slumber is simply insufficient for me. I left house for work with a tired body and droopy eyes. I was accustomed to the route I usually take to the bus stop, so despite paying littlest attention on my footsteps, I managed to arrive at my destination effortlessly.
All that went into my ears was the blasting music streaming on my playlist. With every jerk that accompanied the halting of the bus, I was being pulled out of daze, then worrying if I missed my stop. I never did, and I hope I never will.
I reached the restaurant early, and realised there was yet another unfamiliar face. With a simple "Grace, right?" I gradually became used to addressing her by her name. Mhars, whom I had not seen for awhile, was the MOD, and she gave me a hug when I greeted her. That sweetened my day quite a bit. It felt as though there were much haste in everyone's footsteps, so I hurried myself a bit and got on the floor before my shift officially started. However, it was not as busy as it seemed.
I feel that I have a better rein of my temper now than before, but there is still a limit to my thin patience too, of course. I can only progress at my own pace. I attended to customers' needs, and not long after I started work, the crowd gradually dispersed.
Being as absent-minded as I always have, the gesture of giving out our endearmints to guests constantly slipped out of my mind. Then I had to make return trips just so as to send the endearmints to the customers after they have already settled the bill.
Ash was his usual funny self, and he helped out with everything he could. I had fun teasing him with the little boy who outwitted him with a riddle. He always exudes an aura that is bound to tickle people and make them giggle.
The crowd died down along with the clock ticking, and with more time on our hands, it began to feel like we were idling around. I seized the opportunity to do what I would love to call my passion. Ironically, I have absolutely no confidence in what I do, but howbeit, it would not hinder me and I would still give it my best. So, pardon me for my umpteen carelessness coupled with my preposterous blunders. I am wholly apologetic for being a nuisance more than of any help.
Just so you know, I have been utterly fascinated with the icemaker with have in the kitchen, and to put my inquiring mind at ease, I have bombarded Khai with a throng of questions about that machine.
Whilst at the mouth of the bar, chatting with Grace when the restaurant was practically empty, my left ear twitched (as if!), upon hearing the icemaker dispensing the ice. Overwhelming with great excitement, I barged into the kitchen lest I missed my chance to see the ice being dispensed.
View and Minthu stood there in astonishment while I flipped open the lid to the machine. View was unable to hold her laughter and she broke into hysterics. It must have been really hilarious to her as she re-enacted the entire scene for us to see, then she started laughing again. Was it that silly of me, really?
Two whole minutes past five was what I read off the digital clock on the POS system. I yelled with glee, "Yay, I'm done", headed for the kitchen to grab something light to suppress my hunger.
I got my piping hot rice, meagre in amount, but good enough for me. Funny as it is, I prefer my rice warm and hard. Then again, I do not really have a liking for rice. To make my white rice more tasty, I drenched it with a good amount of garlic lemon butter. I took a small portion of omelette to go with my rice. A simple yet appetising meal to last me throughout my night.
I stood in the kitchen to finish my food, near gobbling down everything, but not just yet. I was merely too eager to get out to help. To my dismay, there were still no customers, so I decided to sit around at station D since Farhan was there. It had been ages since I last saw my best friend, and it was irrevocable that I was yearning to see him. Soulmate arrived bang on time, and I had not seen her for a day, and I pined for her presence too.
I was getting uptight despite being a Thursday night. After all, once bitten twice shy. I suppose I was just blessed with a little luck by not breaking anything, and if memory still serves me well, there were only three drinks that required the blender.
Soulmate led the birthday rap for the night, and it was her maiden shot at it. Kudos to her. I understand how much of an achievement can your first birthday rap bring to you.
As nine was drawing closer, the restaurant started to quieten down with fewer and fewer guests left to serve. I sat down with Ash and Joice as he debriefed her, then was also when Khai came down to Fish & Co.
Farhan managed to close his runner station early, hence he sought for my companionship. I accompanied him up to the opened deck for a puff of a cigarette. I finally asked him the question I have been meaning to ask. I felt better letting it out of my chest, and yes, I am trying to prepare myself mentally.
It was good to have closed the restaurant earlier than usual, yet I did not get home any earlier. I was not particularly concerned about that. I just despised walking through coffeshops at night as the same old thing will never cease to occur.
